3 Fun Ways To Camp At A Medieval Event
My first time at a medieval event I was in awe of the campsites that were set up. As I drove though the gate I felt butterflies in my stomach at the sight of the white period tents standing proudly with banners flapping in the wind. The sheer amazement you feel when you see all of those medieval tents in one place is an incredible feeling. My question to myself was, would my modern tent be acceptable among a sea of medieval tents? My first event was the Great Northeastern War in Hebron, Maine. When I first walked around I found out rather quickly my “mundane tent” was completely acceptable.…

Hugelkultur, Nutrient Rich Environment For A Raised Garden Bed
This post is about how we used the Huglekultur method to fill our raised garden beds. Hugelkultur is an inexpensive, easy and nutrient rich way to fill your garden beds. It is essentially building a mound of logs, sticks, branches, leaves, compost, and other organic matter for your soil base. These things in the bottom of the bed decompose over time creating nutrient rich soil. We found through much research this seemed like the logical way to go due to the raw materials available to us from our new houses property. Not only were we trying to save money on the costs of filling the beds, we also wanted to…

How To Build A Raised Garden Bed
Once again it has been awhile since I last posted. There has been a lot that has happened in the past year. We bought a house last November! Not much could be done in the way of the yard and we had to wait all winter to see what surprises came up in the spring. However we are an impatient lot over here and decided to landscape our side yard. First on our list was that we wanted a garden again, and this time we had the space to do it right. We decided Raised garden beds were the way to go. Bending over and getting down on my hands…

How To Reclaim Your Outdoor Space
This year my Husband and I decided to reclaim our outdoor space. We live in a 3 story apartment building, in the city. We have lived here for seven years and seen neighbors come and go and watched the slow deterioration of the property. It is a very old apartment building with not a lot of outward charm. The front of the building is pretty close to the sidewalk, but does have a small amount of frontage for planting things and there is a decent backyard and that is located on a river. The main thing is that this is an apartment building and it’s not our property. However we…

How selling what we love lead to our success
It has been a while since writing my last post. Spring is here and I am finally out of the winter funk that has consumed me. I don’t know how many out there get the winter blues, but I get the blues pretty hard. Feeling the temperatures rise and seeing buds on the trees give me a sense of renewal and the want of finally doing things again. One of those things is dedicating myself back to my blog. I want to kind of pick up where I had left off from my last post. One of the things that I have been writing about in the past is the…

The Birth of Bag Making
In my previous post I had told you how I came to be self-employed. In this post I will continue my story of how I went from having a shop to working from home. I had my alteration shop for about a year. I started to experience some health issues that made me driving an hour and half a day not safe. So it was a sad day when I had to make the decision to close my shop. I didn’t know what was going to happen and deep sadness set in.  While I had my alteration shop I took in all kinds of work. One of the things that…

A Life Altering Decision To Begin A Business
I have decided to tell you a bit about how I began my own business to became independent. I have always wanted to own my own business since I was in the third grade. I never really knew what it would be, however I knew it would happen someday. I was working as an Advertising Rep for a small newspaper back in 2007-2010. I went from business to business soliciting print ads from them. Most places I visited were small businesses. I had an area that covered about 350 miles so there was a lot of selling to be done. One thing that I discovered through all of the business…

Fall Days
Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Number one, it is my birthday in the fall, but it’s the change of the weather, the changing of the leaves and the changing in to warmer clothing, especially hoodies that makes it great. Apple Picking One of the things that I love to do with my family is apple picking. I think it is one of the best ways to kick off fall. Needless to say from the picture my family loves apples. By far my favorite apple is the Honeycrisp and judging by the 3 overflowing bags of the redder apples in the picture this is evident.. It…

My Medieval Life Beginnings
I was introduced to the Society for Creative Anachronism by a new friend who had been a part of it for 27 years. The Society for Creative Anachronism is a world wide organization that is dedicated to the re-creation of life during the Middle Ages. I would describe it as being a part of a community who actively immerses themselves in gaining more knowledge and understanding of history through the act of doing activities, research, combat, events and demos. When I met my friend in May 2013, it was supposed to be a short lunch, however when I got to the restaurant, he then asked me; what do you want to know. He…

Exploring Close To Home
This year all of our medieval events have been canceled do to Covid . So instead of attending events on weekends we have been venturing out and about locally for something else to do. We haven’t done enough exploring close to where we live , however what we have done was really nice. Our other intention is to stay in Pennsic shape. Pennsic is a huge medieval event held at the beginning of August for two weeks in Pennsylvania. 10,000 people from all over the world attend this event every year to set up a medieval encampment that spans 1 square mile. Pennsic even gets it’s own postal code during…
